Take Care with Your Soy Sauce

Many people in America get in the habit of pouring out a shallow pool of soy sauce to mix with wasabi and dip their sushi into. If you are in such a habit, you are probably accustomed to ending each meal with a dish full of leftover soy sauce after all the sushi is gone. You won’t hear anybody complain about this at our Bothell Sushi restaurant, but you should take care that this doesn’t happen if you ever find yourself dining in Japan.

To the Japanese, it is considered very poor etiquette to have leftover soy sauce. Leaving too much behind is not only a waste of a very important condiment, but it also shows that you’re not trusting the sensibilities of your chef. When you find yourself dining at a Japanese sushi restaurant, try to pour out only what you need in order to reduce your waste.
